Seminar Dates: June 2 - 22, 2008 Applicants must be enrolled as history majors and/or in closely related majors in privately funded liberal arts colleges and be entering their senior years in fall 2008 A Full Application will be SUBMITTED IN FOUR COPIES and must include: * A cover sheet providing the following information: name, college, campus and permanent mailing addresses, e-mail, social security number and the name/title of the faculty honors/thesis advisor *A resume * An official college transcript * A statement of no more than five double-spaced pages explaining why the applicant is attracted to the study of early American history from 1776-1861. What leading idea(s), problem(s), theme(s) compel your attention? Why? How have such interests arisen? What courses, books, related materials and/or personal experiences have most influenced your thinking? How? The Selection Committee is looking for statements that convey the applicant’s range and depth of learning, his/her historical-mindedness, his/her intellectual self-awareness, and his/her capacity to express thoughts in clear, well organized prose. Two letters of recommendation from faculty members. One of those faculty members must be clearly identified as the applicant’s proposed senior thesis advisor. * A separate statement from the applicant’s advisor. This statement should explain the advisor’s own academic interests and goals, and how participation in the Seminar might further these interests and goals. *The advisor should also supply for inclusion a brief (2-3pp) curriculum vita.
